What Is Tic Tac Toe?

Tic Tac Toe (also called Noughts and Crosses or Xs and Os) is one of the world's oldest strategy games. Two players take turns marking spaces — one uses X, the other O — on a 3×3 grid. The first player to place three of their marks in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal row wins the round.

Our online version extends the classic with a demanding 4×4 board mode, six AI difficulty levels from Easy to God+, and full 2-player local multiplayer so you can challenge a friend sitting next to you.

How to Play

  1. Choose your mode — vs Computer or vs Friend.
  2. In vs Computer mode, pick a difficulty and whether you want to go first (X) or second (O).
  3. In vs Friend mode, enter both player names and optionally switch to the 4×4 board.
  4. Click Start Game, then take turns clicking squares on the board.
  5. Get three (or four on the larger board) in a row to win. Scores are tracked across rounds — hit New Round to play again without resetting the tally.

Easy and Medium are great for newcomers and kids. Hard is a solid challenge for most adults. Expert and the two God tiers are for players who want a genuine mental workout on the expanded 4×4 grid where the extra space makes the game dramatically more complex.

2-Player Mode — Play With a Friend

Select vs Friend, enter both names, and the game will automatically alternate turns and display whose move it is. Both players share the same screen — just hand the device over or play side by side. Scores persist across rounds so you can run a full best-of-five series.

Tips & Strategy

Control the centre

On a 3×3 board the centre square is involved in four possible winning lines. Claiming it on your first move gives you the most offensive flexibility and forces your opponent to defend immediately.

Take a corner on move one

If you go second and the opponent didn't take the centre, grab a corner. This maximises your winning chances and limits the opponent's forking opportunities.

Watch for forks

A fork is a position where you have two ways to win on your next move, making it impossible to block both. On the 4×4 board, forks become even more powerful — the Expert AI actively builds them.

Block before you attack

On Medium difficulty and above the AI will immediately block any winning threat you have. Develop the same habit yourself — a missed block almost always means a loss.

Why Tic Tac Toe Is Great for Brainpower

  • Pattern recognition — spotting threats and opportunities develops a skill used in maths, coding, and chess.
  • Forward planning — at harder difficulties you must think 2–3 moves ahead, building the same "if-then" thinking that underlies logical reasoning.
  • Quick decision-making — unlike slower strategy games, Tic Tac Toe trains rapid evaluation under time pressure.
  • Fair play — a perfect demonstration of turn-based respect that makes it an excellent classroom or family game.
